Compress a video for messaging apps without uploading it
Messaging apps reject oversized clips or silently re-compress them. Upload-based “online compressors” take the whole file to a server first. This guide uses LocalVideoZip so bytes stay in your browser until you download the result and attach it yourself.
What “small enough” means
Limits change by app, platform, and connection. WhatsApp’s own help center documents default video size/resolution ceilings that depend on connection speed (for example, lower MB and resolution on slower links). Treat our “messaging-friendly” preset as a practical starting point, not a guarantee of every client’s current cap. Always check the app’s current help article if a send fails.
Steps
- Export or copy the clip to a file you can open (MP4 is usually easiest).
- Open the LocalVideoZip compressor on a trusted device.
- Drop the file. Confirm name and size.
- Choose the messaging-friendly (smaller file) preset.
- Run compression on this device, then download.
- Attach the download in WhatsApp (or your messaging app) from the device gallery/files picker.
If it still will not send
- Try a shorter excerpt of the same video.
- Lower resolution in a second pass (quality/CRF preset, then messaging preset).
- Send as a document if your app allows larger documents than chat videos (limits differ — see the app’s docs).
- On iPhone, sharing from another app can apply different caps than in-chat attach; compress first, then attach from Files.
Privacy note
Do not paste cloud share links into this tool — it only accepts local files. Watch Network in DevTools if you want proof the media never left the tab.
